ABC/ESPN Reverse Mirror

The ABC/ESPN Reverse Mirror returns for the 2010 season.  The reverse mirror was added in 2007 as part of the Big 10's TV contract with ABC/ESPN.  The reverse mirror ensures national coverage of the Big 10 game that airs during the 2:30 TV window on ABC.

A prime example of how the reverse mirror works is what we'll have tomorrow.  Locally on WOI-TV, we will get the UCLA @ Kansas St game and the Connecticut @ Michigan game will air on ESPN2.  In the Mason City TV market as well as Eastern Iowa, it's reversed with the Michigan game on ABC and the Kansas St. game on ESPN2.

The reverse mirror will be in play next week for the Iowa/Iowa St. game giving the big game national coverage, either on ABC or ESPN/ESPN2 and since the game is played at Iowa City, the Big 10 TV contract will apply.

What a crazy day!

Is there a full moon right around the corner?  Wow, what a crazy day when it comes to sports and the media and i'm not even talking about Big 10 divisions.

#1 - St. Louis Cardnail Baseball is returning to KMOX (AM 1120) in 2011.  This is HUGE news for Cardnail fans all across the Midwest.

#2 As a result of the NFL Network and the National Cable Television Cooperative.("NCTC") reaching an important deal which includes several of the nation's biggest cable providers, Cable One which is the primary cable TV provider in Sioux City, will soon be adding the NFL Network.  It's my understanding that Mediacom is a member of the NCTC, so there may be hope for those who have no other choice but Mediacom, the NFL Network will hopefully soon be added.

#3 - BYU and the ESPN Family of Networks coming to an agreement on a contract that will allow BYU home football games to be televised on one of the many ESPN networks for the next 8 years...WOW!!!  I didn't even think of the ramifications that this could have for the Big 12 until I listened to Matt & Miller on the drive home tonight.  The unsettled future of the Big 12 as it was, just went into double quick sand with BYU announcing this TV deal.  Texas now has the firepower it needs to go independent in 2 or 3 years.

Westwood One announces their NFL announcing teams for 2010

Kevin Harlan will succeed Marv Alberts as "the NFL voice of Westwood One" and will partner with Boomer Esiason.  Kevin will have the lead role on the Monday Night Football and Super Bowl broadcasts.  Growing up a Chiefs fan in the early 90's, i've always been a fan of Kevin's work.

Check your local radio dial for the Westwood One affiliate in your area.

As expected, Disney/ESPN/ABC reach a carriage agreement with Time Warner Cable

With the clock striking midnight, both parties reach an agreement.  Of course details of the agreement will never be made public, but I wonder how quickly it'll be before customers of the 2nd largest cable provider gets notice of a rate increase.

Is the NHL exploring a return to ESPN?

We can bash ESPN all we want to for the perceived biases in their coverage of sports, but one thing that cann't be denied is when ESPN has the rights to a particular sport, they promote the heck out of it.

VERSUS seems to do a good job with their coverage of the NHL and the NHL gets top billing on VERSUS, but what hurts the NHL on VERSUS is the lack of exposure, because let's be honest, when it comes to sports on TV, VERSUS isn't the first network that comes to mind.  That said, if the Comcast proposal to buy NBC clears approval by the Federal Government,  Comcast could be poised to make the NHL on VERSUS popular by cross promoting the league on NBC owned cable networks like USA and potentially airing more games than ever before on NBC's other cable networks.

If the NHL would return to ESPN following the 2010-11 season, will the NHL get top billing on ESPN?  ESPN already has a full plate during the winter months with extensive college basketball and NBA coverage.
