NHL Ratings Are On An Upswing

NBC's regular season coverage of the NHL is enjoying it's highest TV ratings in 14 years.

From an NBC press release, NBC's telecast of Pittsburgh vs Chicago, which went head-to-head against the Daytona 500, generated nearly two million viewers, which makes it the most watched regular season hockey game outside of the January 1 Winter Classic in nearly five years.

So far this season, for NBC's 5 regular season televised games, including the Winter Classic, the Peacock Network is averaging 2.1 million viewers, the most viewers since the days of the glowing puck on Fox Sports.

NBC Sports has all three Triple Crown races

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know alot about the horse racing industry, but the sport is big here in Iowa with the success of Prairie Meadows and Paddy O'Prado, finished 3rd in last year's Kentucky Derby and is owned by several Iowan's.

Today, NBC Sports announced it reached a multi-year agreement to be the TV home of the Triple Crown. According to a press release, NBC will televise all three legs of the Triple Crown and the NBC Sports Group (NBC, VERSUS & Comcast SportsNet) will present 25 hours worth of Triple Crown coverage. In addition, expanded Kentucky Derby coverage, including the Kentucky Oaks will be found on VERSUS.

Daytona 500 Ratings

Fox Sports has released the TV ratings for Sunday's Daytona 500 and NASCAR & Fox Sports officials are pleased with the results.

According to a press release, a total audience of just over 30 million tuned in for the Great American Race, making it the most watched Daytona 500 since the 2008 race and this year's race saw a 13% increase in viewership from last year's race. Peak viewership for the Daytona 500 came during the closing laps with just under 20 million viewers tuning in.

Keep in mind that last year's race was delayed several times with track surface issues, so it's no big surprise that the ratings were up when compared to last year.

Ratings between the season opening race and future races normally tumble, but it remains to be seen whether or not Fox can increase it's season long ratings performance as overall ratings for NASCAR has been in a steady decline the last several years.
