ESPN's broadcast plans for the FIFA Women's World Cup

Last year, the men and their month-long World Cup and in 2011, the women get to compete for Women's World Cup which runs from June 26-July 17.

According to a Press Release, all 32 matches will be shown in HD on both ESPN & ESPN2 and for the first time ever, studio programming will air from Germany, which is the host nation for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

For soccer fans, ESPN has a assembled a "who's who" team of commentators and studio analysts, and to be honest, the only name I recognize is Brandi Chastain, however, you can get a full roster of commentators and studio analysts at the link above.



Sunday MLB on TBS heads to Boston tomorrow

Sunday MLB on TBS heads to Boston tomorrow for an inter-league matchup between the Red Sox and Brewers. However, do not be surprised to tune into TBS tomorrow and find the game blacked out across all of Iowa.

Milwaukee claims all of Iowa as part of their home TV market, so any national appearance on say TBS or ESPN will be blacked out. If you have Dish Network or DirecTV, you will be able to watch the game on FS Wisconsin, cable customers will be totally blacked out.

NHL Network to air live the Boston Bruins championship parade

With Boston having wrapped up the Stanley Cup Championship earlier this week, Saturday is a day to party in New England.

According to a Press Release, the NHL Network will simulcast NESN's coverage of the championship celebration that begins tomorrow morning at 9am (CT).  In addition, Boston Bruin themed programming will be shown on NHL Network all day today.

ESPN to televise it's 9th consecutive NBA Draft

With the NBA season complete, the first major event of the off season occurs next week with the NBA Draft and for the 9th year in a row, ESPN will provide live coverage of the NBA Draft with multiple ESPN platforms teaming up for blanket coverage next Thursday night.

CBS Sports & the Big 10 Conference announce a multi-year agreement for basketball coverage

The Big 10 Conference & CBS Sports today have announced a multi-year agreement that will allow CBS Sport to continue to televise men's basketball games.

According to a Press Release from the Big 10 Conference, the new agreement will begin with the 2011-12 academic year and run through the 2016-17 academic year.  The new agreement calls for a minimum of 24 men's basetball games to be televised, including three "wild card" weekends along with coverage of the Big 10 Men's Basketball Tournament.  The new deal also calls for a few women's games to be televised on CBS.

Last night's Stanley Cup Final Game 7 ties a rating's record

Game 7's in the playoff's are always a big deal and last night's decisive Game 7 of the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Finals between Vancouver & Boston lived up to the ratings expectations.

According to a Press Release from NBC Sports, last night's Game 7 generated an overnight rating of  5.7 overnight rating and a 10 share, tying the 2003 final of Anaheim vs New Jersey  for the best Game 7 overnight on record.

Last night's 5.7 overnight ties for the second-best Stanley Cup overnight rating in 37 years.

NBA Digital sees record traffic during the NBA Finals

Not only did ABC enjoy ratings success during the NBA Finals, but NBA Digital, the web & mobile platform for the NBA enjoyed a huge bump in traffic and downloads as well.

According to a Press Release, NBA.com delievered over 140 million streams with over 400 million page views, when compared to last year, that's an increase of 89% and 11%, respectively.  Over on the mobile side, downloads for the NBA GameTime app was up 37% when compared to last year.

Tennis Channel's Wimbledon coverage starts June 20

Unlike the French Open, Tennis Channel won't have live coverage of matches from the 2011 Wimbledon, however, Tennis Chanel will be in England to provide non-match coverage.

According to a Press Release, Wimbledon will offer prime-time highlights that start Monday, June 20 at 6pm (CT).  In addition to TV coverage, Tennis Channel's web site will offer columns, highlights, and blogs.

Universal Sports is coming to DirecTV

Big news yesterday for fans of "Olympic sports" who have DirecTV as the two parties announced a carriage agreement that will bring the NBC-owned Universal Sports to DirecTV.

According to Universal Sports, the channel will launch to all DirecTV subscribers later this Summer and in October, Universal Sports will move to DirecTV's Sports Pack.

CBS Sports Network to simulcast the Tim Brando radio show

The trend started a few years ago when ESPN started to simulcast the Mike & Mike radio program on ESPN and it continued with other ESPN radio shows as well as the Dan Patrick show being simulcasted on FSN.

Today, you can add another as CBS Sports announced that starting in August, the Tim Brando Radio Show, airing across the country on Sporting News Radio will be simulcasted on the CBS Sports Network.

Brando is a fixture on CBS Sports Coverage of NCAA Football and the radio show is in it's tenth year.

NBC Sports Group to provide extensive coverage of the US Open

While ESPN may have the majority of live coverage from the first two rounds of the 2011 US Open, that's not stopping the NBC Sports Group from covering the action.

According to a Press Release, The Golf Channel will have nearly 50 hours worth of coverage from the US Open including highlight shows, analysis, and interviews.  Meanwhile on NBC, 16 hours worth of coverage will be aired, including two hours worth of coverage on Thursday-Friday from 2-4pm (CT).

Longhorn Network to launch Friday, August 26

The Longhorn Network, the joint partnership between ESPN & The University of Texas announced today that the 24-7 a day channel devoted to Texas will sign on for the first time on Friday, August 26.

In addition, the first slate of programming for the new channel was announced.  Longhorn Extra will air nightly at 9pm (CT), think of Sportscenter for this show.

ESPN's coverage of the College World Series begins Saturday

"The Road to Omaha" has reached Omaha, the College World Series begins this weekend and the ESPN family of networks is planning extensive coverage.

According to a press release from ESPN, mulitple ESPN platforms will be used for the College World Series as well as gimmicks such as K Zone 2.0 and X MO Replays will be used.

Goodbye Fox Soccer Channel, hello FOX Soccer

Fox Sports today announced that the Fox Soccer Channel has been re-branded with a new name of FOX Soccer.

The move reflects the fact that soccer fans across the globe get Fox Soccer content from just the traditional wired TV (i.e., web streaming, mobile, etc.).

In addition to the name change, new graphics, music, etc. will be introduced when FOX Soccer kick's off it's coverage of the Barclays Premier League in August.

Putting a bow on ratings for the NBA Finals

With the NBA Finals now over, ESPN/ABC has released some impressive numbers regarding viewership.

According to a Press Release, over the course of the six game series, ABC averaged over 17.2 million viewers and a 10.1 rating, making it the second most watched Finals since 2004.  Sunday's deceive Game 6 averaged a whopping 23.5 million viewers and with overall ratings up 33% from 2006, the last time Dallas and Miami squared off in the NBA Finals.

A look at ESPN's coverage of Wimbledon

Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the tennis season begins Monday, June 20th and multiple ESPN platforms are coming together to provide extensive coverage.

According to a Press Release from ESPN, coverage begins Monday morning, June 20th on ESPN2 & ESPN3.com.  Fans will be able to watch the action on multiple ESPN platforms that will include ESPN2, ESPN3.com, ESPN Mobile, the WatchESPN App, and ESPN Interactive TV.

Tennis has been important to ESPN since the original ESPN went on the air in 1979 and this will be the 8th year that ESPN has televised Wimbledon.

Game 6 of the NBA Finals generates a 15.0 overnight rating

Last night's decisive Game 6 of the 2011 NBA Finals was the highest-rated Game 6 ever on ABC and easily won the night as the most watched show in prime-time.

According to a Press Release from ESPN, last night's Game 6 generated an overnight rating 15.0, up 35% from when Dallas & Miami last met in the Finals back in 2006 and up 22% from last year's Game Six of the NBA Finals between the LA Lakers & Boston.

Golf Channel to present nearly 50 hours of US Open Coverage

With or without Tiger Woods and even with no actual coverage of live competition, The Golf Channel is going to have blanket coverage of this week's US Open.

The Golf Channel is going to present fifty hours of coverage from the US Open.  Everything from press conference's, to talk shows, and highlight shows.

Without Tiger Woods, it will certainly be interesting to see what the ratings will be.

Overnight ratings for the Belmont Stakes up 55%

With no Triple Crown on the line yesterday, the 2011 Belmont Stakes still managed to generate decent ratings. According to a Press Release, NBC Sports is reporting that overnight ratings for the Belmont Stakes was up 55% from last year's event.

The strong ratings for the Belmont Stake follow NBC Sports coverage of the highly rated Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
