ESPN issues a statement regarding Bruce Feldman

When news broke last night of the Bruce Feldman suspension from ESPN, a fury was created on Twitter not only from sports fans who enjoy Feldman's work, but from fellow sports writers as well. The firestorm regarding the suspension has forced ESPN to issue a statement of denial regarding the suspension.

USA Today is reporting that ESPN has denied that Feldman has been suspended and has "resumed his duties" with ESPN.  What does "resumed his duties mean"?  Does it mean he was actually suspended?  So this just raises more questions, was the original report by Sports by Brooks false?  Or was the report true and the firestorm that resulted made ESPN backtrack and issue a statement?

ESPN Radio's Don't Ever Give Up Auction raises over $800,000

ESPN Radio's annual "Don't Ever Give Up" auction raised over $810,000 for cancer research. According to a Press Release from ESPN, the money raised in this year's auction was up a mind blowing 61% from last year's $504,000.

In seven years of doing the auction, ESPN Radio's auction has raised over $4.9 million for the V Foundation's effort to find a cure cancer.

For more information, please visit the Web Site linked above.

ESPN suspends Bruce Feldman

ESPN's suspension of Bruce Feldman has really taken off on Twitter over night and in the sports world.  It all started last night when reports began to surface that Feldman was suspended indefinitely from ESPN for his work with the recently released book by former Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach in which Leach was critical of ESPN and Craig James over the alleged treatment of James' son..

There has to be more to the story because Feldman had received prior approval from his bosses at ESPN to work on the Leach project.  So even after Leach files a lawsuit against ESPN and their analyst Craig James for libel and slander, they suspend a great college football writer for his work on a book project after he received permission to do so.

Just another reason to not have anything to do with ESPN.  This morning's Dan Patrick show should be interesting to listen to.

USA's run to the Women's World Cup Championship is a ratings boom

Some impressive TV ratings are coming in for yesterday's United States FIFA Women's World Cup semi-final match.  According to a Press Release from ESPN, 3.35 million ESPN viewers tuned in for the match.  What's impressive is that the match started in the late morning hours in the Central Time Zone with over 450,000 watching on ESPN3.com.

Those ratings are damn impressive, meaning that people were taking an extended lunch break to watch a World Cup soccer match, but it has been proven that these United States runs on the global soccer stage does very little to boost the popularity of the world's most popular game in the United States.  If the FIFA Women's World Cup was staged in the Autumn months, no one in the United States would even notice.

ESPN is starting to assemble college football broadcast teams

It won't be long now until college football teams start the rigors of training camp and ESPN is starting to assemble broadcast teams for the 2011 season.

According to a report in The Oregonian, former Oregon football coach Mike Bellotti will team up with Beth Mowins to call the action for ESPN2's 11am (CT) telecasts.

I know alot of fans can't stand women doing play by play of men's sporting events, but really, i'm indifferent and could care less either way.  I don't watch sports for the play by play announcers or for scantly clad sideline reporters.

Turner Sports announces the addition of Shaquille O'Neal

Last weekend, I had made mention that there were reports that Shaquille O'Neal was going to join Turner Sports today, Turner Sports made it offical.

According to a Press Release, Turner Sports and O'Neal agreed to a multi-year contract to be an NBA analyst across multiple NBA platforms including Turner Sports, NBA.com, and NBATV.  O'Neal will appear on TNT's studio show joining Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith.

Sporting News Radio affiliates across Iowa

KFJB (1230) out of Marshalltown is the only radio station I could find that broadcasts Sporting News Radio, with programming aired in the evening and on the weekends.  However, you can listen to SNR talent like Tim Brando and Steve Czaban at www.sportingnewsradio.com, on smart phones via the TuneIn App, and starting later this summer, Tim Brando's show will be simulcasted on CBS Sports Network.

Back in the day when I was running all over Ankeny in the overnight hours with my paper route, WSCR (670 The Score) out of Chicago carried SNR's overnight programming, whether they still do or not, I have no idea.

For those who don't know, tomorrow is ESPN Radio's V Foundation Auction for cancer research.  I think just heard Mike & Mike mention that tomorrow is the 7th annual auction.

The late Jim Valvano announced the creation of the V Foundation during his famous ESPY speech in the early 90's.  I'm sure that anyone who reads this has been personally effected by the dreaded disease and what ESPN is doing to help find a cure is a very good thing.

You can see Valvano's speech here.

FCC says a judge should make Comcast offer Tennis Channel on basic cable packages

There is an interesting battle taking place between The Tennis Channel and Comcast over Comcast's placement of The Tennis Channel in digital sports packages rather than the more widely viewed basic cable packages.

You can read the entire article here, but Multichannel News is reporting that the FCC enforcement bureau has told an administrative judge that he should require Comcast to offer The Tennis Channel on a widely viewed programming package.

What it comes down to is that Comcast owns both VERSUS and The Golf Channel and Comcast makes both channels available in widely viewed programming packages while offering The Tennis Channel in digital ala-carte sports packages and the folks at The Tennis Channel feel they are being discriminated against.  FCC rules prohibit cable operators like Comcast from favoring their own channels over similar, non-owned & operated channels, which clearly is what Comcast is doing.

I would agree what Comcast doing is wrong.  However, if The Tennis Channel agreed to be placed in Comcast digital sports packages and that's what is in the contract, why is The Tennis Channel making such a big deal over it?  Next time the carriage agreement with Comcast is up for renewal, then demand to be placed in a widely viewed programming package.

ESPN names Dari Nowkhah as new studio host on ESPNU

With the announcement last week that Lowel Galindo would be leaving his job as studio host on ESPNU and moving over to the Longhorn Network, ESPN wasted no time in naming a replacement.

According to a Press Release from ESPN, Dari Nowkhah is making the move from ESPN in Bristol and will be the new studio host for ESPNU in their Charlotte, NC studios.  Nowkhah describes himself as a "college sports nut" and will be the third studio host in the six year history of ESPNU.

For those who have never seen ESPNU's studio programming, even though it may have the name of "ESPN" attached to it, ESPNU is totally separate from ESPN and I personally find their studio & highlight shows to be a breath of fresh air from Lou Holtz.
