An NFL 18 Game Regular Season Could Mean a New TV Partner

Interesting article here from the LA Times.  The LA Times is reporting that if the NFL expands it's regular season to 18 weeks, it's possible that the NFL could carve out a portion of their expanded schedule and create a new  TV package, similar to what the NFL did for the games appearing on The NFL Network.

The last time the NFL did this, VERSUS, which is owned by Comcast Cable (the nation's largest cable provider), was the rumored front runner until the NFL decided to park it's late season schedule of games on it's NFL Network and as Iowans know, this has done little to get Mediacom, Iowa's largest cable provider, to add The NFL Network.  If the NFL Network had a full 18 game schedule, that would put more pressure on Mediacom to add the NFL Network, but at what price to it's subscribers and in in particular, subscribers who could care less about sports?

Despite Comcast & the NFL coming to agreement a year or two ago for The NFL Network, Comcast is still sore at the NFL for selling it's Sunday Ticket Package excursively to DirecTV, even though DirecTV was the highest bidder.  Comcast getting an NFL package and putting it on VERSUS, would further legitimatize the once all hunting and outdoors channel as a player in the sports TV world.

Who knows what will happen in 2012, that's the target date for an expanded NFL Schedule, but first things first, the NFL & the NFLPA need to get their labor issues squared away with.

Changes continue to be made at ESPN News

In addition to the previously announced 7 hours a day of live SportsCenter on ESPN News that starts August 30th, the all sports news cable network recently announced the addition of two new shows, Beat Me and Highlight Express.

Beat Me will air daily at 5:30pm (Central) and according to an ESPN press release, Beat Me will provide an entertaining and quirky look at sports and sports stories, as an alternative to SportsCenter, airing on ESPN at that time.  It will consist of stories, highlights, interviews and a variety of segments playing off the show’s name – “On the Beat,” “Beats Me,” “Bite Beat,” etc.

Highlight Express will air at 10pm (Central) and according to the same press release, Highlight Express will present the day’s best highlights and sound bites in a fast-paced half-hour format.

What I don't get is that in the same press release, ESPN News announced that July 2010 was their best month ever topping 60,000 homes in July and based on 2009, the most recent complete year of statistics, ESPN News is the nation’s only nationally measured network with at least 40 million homes, a median age under 40 and a median income over $70,000.

So if it's not broke, why fix it?  ESPN News is carried on the digital tiers of most cable companies, so unlike basic cable networks like ESPN or TBS, ESPN News really doesn't have that much of a wide distribution.

Here's a link to the press release:  http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/2010/08/two-new-shows-on-espnews-provide-alternative-look-at-sports-starting-aug-30/

From the "you don't see this everyday dept".

Notre Dame officials have asked NBC, who's televised Notre Dame home football games since the early 1990's, to alter it's commercial load to accommodate Head Coach Brian Kelly's uptempo offense. Even though Notre Dame has a national following, somehow I don't think Coach Kelly will find the TV partners of their road opponents to be all that accommodating.

A Legend Returns for 2011

Vin Scully announced yesterday that he is returning in 2011 for his 62nd year behind the mic calling Dodger games for Fox Sports.  I'm not an Extra Innings subscriber, but when DirecTV has it's free preview of Extra Innings, watching Dodger games is a must just to hear Vin Scully.  What's amazing is Vin remains pretty sharp behind the mic.  My hope is that Vin knows when it's time to walk away because another legendary broadcaster, Keith Jackson, didn't know when it was time to walk away and it showed in the work he did.

ESPN's SportsCenter soon to be live for 16 hours a day

Kinda of sad that ESPN is doing this, however, with SportsCenter running live into the early afternoon hours, because other than for the evening hours and on the weekends, ESPN News is rather useless.  I DVR ESPN's College Football Live and the other night, I sat down to watch it and instead, I get Brett Farve's news conference.  Something like that is what ESPN News is for.

Fox Sports Announces it's 2010 NFL Broadcast Team

It's going to be fun to watch former Iowa Barnstormer & UNI Panter Kurt Warner move from the playing field to the broadcast booth.  Unlike many former pro atheletes, Kurt is certainly well spoken, but does he "have it" for the broadcast booth?

Following are the NFL on FOX announcer pairings for 2010:

Joe Buck, Troy Aikman & Pam Oliver
Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston, Tony Siragusa
Dick Stockton, Charles Davis, Jim Mora Jr, & Laura Okmin
Thom Brennaman, Brain Billick & Charissa Thompson
Sam Rosen, Tim Ryan & Chris Myers
Ron Pitts, John Lynch & Nischelle Turner
Chris Myers/Chris Rose, Kurt Warner

Is it just me or does CBS does it the right way and not involve sideline reporters?  More times than not, most of the sideline reporters are nothing more than eye candy used to pull in the younger male demographic (18 and below) who really don't watch sports to begin with.

Jay Mariotti of ESPN's Around the Horn arrested in LA

I remember the day's of Mariotti on Sporting News Radio, he was about as rude as they come.
