Big 12 AD's discuss forming a TV network

So 8 of the 10 AD's of the newly formed Texas League, I mean Big 12 were meeting this past week to discuss the idea of  forming their own TV network .  If the idea of a stand alone Big 12 Network was a stretch at best with Nebraska and their brand name in the conference, how is a proposed Big 12 Network with 10 conference schools going to be viable to advertisers?   Other than the Red River Rivalry, what else is there to sell to advertisers?  It's not like companies are going to beating down the door of the Big 12 TV partners to advertise during the soon to be annual  Iowa St/Baylor match up, but that's a topic for another day.

Details of the meeting last week can be found here:  http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270202/24014910

ESPN Announces it's 2010 College Football Commentators

Probably the most surprising tidbit is that for those who despise Pam Ward, she's been demoted this year, going from the high profile 11am window on either ESPN or ESPN2 to the low profile Saturday afternoon ESPNU telecast.

For media geeks like myself, a full listing of all of  the broadcast teams for the ESPN family of networks (including ABC) can be found here:

Disney/ESPN/ABC vs Time Warner Cable

The contract for Time Warner Cable, the nation's second largest cable company, to carry the Disney owned cable networks (all of the ESPN's Disney Channel, ABC Family, etc.) as well as the ABC owned & operated broadcast stations is due to expire the end of August.  This clearly doesn't effect Iowa, but is worth watching as sooner or later, the Mediacom contract to carry the aforementioned cable networks will expire at some point in time.  Ultimately, when Time Warner & Disney reach an agreement, the terms of the agreement won't be released, but keep in mind that whatever leverage Time Warner has, Mediacom doesn't have that leverage as Des Moines is Mediacom's largest market.

Welcome to Iowa Tube Talk!

First off, some information about me.  My name is Jason and I live in Ankeny, IA.  As a child growing up in the 80's, I was obsessed with media, wether it be radio, TV, or newspapers.  That obsession took me to Iowa Central Community College in Ft Dodge were I majored in radio broadcasting and got a hands on opportunity to run a small campus radio station.  Even though i'm not in any media industry today as a 37 old guy, i'm still obsessed with media, in particular sports media.

So what is the purpose of Iowa Tube Talk?  Well, contrary to what people on either coast may think, Iowa is a hotbed of sports, whether it be high school, college, minor league, or professional. What I hope this blog will turn into, is a one stop shop for a listing of sports on TV in Iowa, whether it be high school, college, minor league, or pro.  In addition to the listings, i'll also be posting links to news about the sports media industry.

If you live in and Iowa and are a sports fan, you know what a melting pot Iowa is for team affiliation.  All of Iowa is in the home TV market for all six of the MLB Midwest Teams as well as all Midwest NHL teams and most Midwest NBA teams and there are fans of all teams in all corners of the state.  Not to mention the huge fan bases of Iowa and Iowa St as well as other regional schools.  Lastly, the king of all sports leagues, the NFL, has huge fan bases of all of the regional teams all over the state.

Some of you may know that there are some great national websites out there that do what i'm planning on doing, but my first and primary focus will be Big 10, Big 12, all of the regional sports networks that serve Iowa  as well what's on TV statewide whether it be the 2:30 ABC College Football game, the Sunday NFL Telecasts, or the Fox MLB Saturday Game of the Week and all times will be in Central Time.  Don't worry, i'll also provide TV listings for those must watch national match ups too.
