Iowa St. men's basketball to appear on The Longhorn Network

The Longhorn Network, a lightening rod for controversy this Summer and into the early Fall, has announced a 12 game schedule of Texas men's basketball games that will be televised on The Longhorn Network during the 2011-12 basketball season and guess who appears on the schedule? Iowa St.

According to a Press Release from ESPN, The Longhorn Network will televise three Big 12 Conference basketball games, one of them is Iowa State's visit to Austin on January 24, 2012 at 8pm (CT).

The Kansas Athletic Department announced this week that even though their game against Texas will be on The Longhorn Network, however, The Jayhawk Network will televise the game throughout  Kansas and the Kansas City metro using their own announcers and on-screen graphics while picking up the Longhorn Network video feed. It's too early to tell if CTN will do the same for this game.

With the future of the Big 12 Conference in doubt, i'm sure this development won't sit well with Iowa St. fans.

Small cable TV providers are raising the red flag on the new ESPN/NFL contract

In another attempt to push for ala-carte cable TV packages (more than likely another failed attempt), the American Cable Association is calling on Congress and the FCC to allow cable providers to carry ESPN and other sports channels in an ala-carte package.

According to the Politco Web Site, the American Cable Association is claiming that the new ESPN/NFL TV contract valued at $1.9 billion per year will lead to higher cable rates that all subscribers will pay, regardless if they watch ESPN or not.  The American Cable Association represents nearly 1,000 small cable TV providers.

In an ala-carte world, you can say goodbye to niche channels like the Oprah channel, DIY, RFD-TV, etc, the niche channels just wont survive in an ala-carte world.  Regardless if I watch a niche channel, just like the non-sports fans who have to pay for ESPN, I have to pay for the niche channels as well and I can  most certainly live with out the Discovery Networks, DIY and I've seen enough of Man vs Food, so I would have no need for The Travel Channel either.

Regardless of which sport it is, sports programming on both cable & over the air TV are putting up huge, huge, TV ratings and with live sporting events being DVR-proof, they will continue to put up huge TV ratings and will continue to generate big time advertising dollars.

If the non-sports fans get their wish and ala-carte cable TV becomes a reality, we'll have a cable TV lineup consisting of about 5 general entertainment networks like USA, TNT, etc. who will continue airing 10 hour marathons of the various Law & Order and CSI series, all of the sports channels, and all of the home shopping and religious channels one person can handle because those channels pay the cable & satellite providers to be carried on their respective systems.

NBC "gets back to football" in a big way

The year of sports on TV getting huge ratings continued last night with NBC's telecast of Sunday Night Football the highest rated regular season NFL telecast in 15 years, generating an overnight rating of 16.9 and a 27 share.

According to a Press Release from NBC Sports, last night’s ratings was up three percent from last year and up 26% from the 2009 Sunday Night Football opener.  As expected, last night’s game put up huge numbers in Texas with Dallas leading the way with a 38.8 rating and 58 share, New York surprisingly generating a 19.7/30 overnight rating.

I think this is the trend we’ll see all year, man caves & 50” HDTV’s have made it easier to watch the games from home, not to mention the cost of attending an NFL game in a bad economy is keeping fans at home as well.
