In addition to the previously announced 7 hours a day of live SportsCenter on ESPN News that starts August 30th, the all sports news cable network recently announced the addition of two new shows, Beat Me and Highlight Express.
Beat Me will air daily at 5:30pm (Central) and according to an ESPN press release, Beat Me will provide an entertaining and quirky look at sports and sports stories, as an alternative to SportsCenter, airing on ESPN at that time. It will consist of stories, highlights, interviews and a variety of segments playing off the show’s name – “On the Beat,” “Beats Me,” “Bite Beat,” etc.
Highlight Express will air at 10pm (Central) and according to the same press release, Highlight Express will present the day’s best highlights and sound bites in a fast-paced half-hour format.
What I don't get is that in the same press release, ESPN News announced that July 2010 was their best month ever topping 60,000 homes in July and based on 2009, the most recent complete year of statistics, ESPN News is the nation’s only nationally measured network with at least 40 million homes, a median age under 40 and a median income over $70,000.
So if it's not broke, why fix it? ESPN News is carried on the digital tiers of most cable companies, so unlike basic cable networks like ESPN or TBS, ESPN News really doesn't have that much of a wide distribution.
