More good news on the retransmission disputes

Late last week, it was reported that Mediacom & Sinclair came to an agreement that would keep KDSM (Des Moines) and KGAN and KFAX both out of Cedar Rapids on the Mediacom lineup, well news broke late this afternoon that Hearst Television, owners of KCCI (Des Moines) and KETV (Omaha) reached an agreement with DirecTV that will keep both stations on the DirecTV lineup after the first of the year.

http://www.kcci.com/news/26099509/detail.html

Sports Media Predictions for 2011

1 - For it's coverage of the Big 10 Championship Game, Fox Sports will utilize the Big 10 Network studio team and #1 announcing team and with their presentation of the Big 10 Championship Game, Fox will have learned what they did wrong and right they did with with their coverage of the BCS.

2 - ESPN will pull the plug on ESPN Classic and will rebrand the channel into an "ESPNU2" channel with heavy focus on Texas and SEC Olympic sports along with college football and basketball telecasts that were once exclusively on ESPN3.com.

3 - Fox Sports will rebrand one of their existing Fox College Sports digital channels into the new Pac 12 Network.

4 - ESPN gets back into the NHL business with a new joint TV contract with NHL and the new NBC Sports Channel, which will happen upon the completion of the Comcast/NBC merger and the subsequent rebranding of VERSUS into the NBC Sports Channel.

5 - With the BCS moving to ESPN starting with the Bowl Games on January 1, 2011, there won't be a ratings decline.

6 - NASCAR ratings continue it's free fall in 2011.

7 - In major Comcast markets like Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Denver, DirecTV will use their ownership of Fox Sports Northwest, Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, and Fox Sports Pittsburgh as leverage to get satellite carriage of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia and Comcast SportsNet Northwest. DirecTV will play hardball with Comcast and tell the nation's largest cable provider to let them carry CSN Philadelphia and CSN Northwest or DirecTV will pull their regional sports networks off of Comcast lineups in Seattle, Denver, and Pittsburgh.

With The University of Texas and the Pac 12 wanting to launch their own cable channels, I think the key issue with getting their new channels off the ground is going to be getting carriage agreements with the major cable and satellite companies and avoiding what the Big 10 went through with the launch of the Big 10 Network.

In fact, I could see the Pac 12 giving joint ownership rights of their new network to the major cable companies, similar to what MLB did with it's MLB Network which is why when MLB Network launched in 2009, it launched in 50 some million homes.

Another carriage dispute

DirecTV and Comcast owned cable channels really need some sort of counseling. In the fall of 2009, Comcast owned VERSUS went dark on DirecTV and was off DirecTV until the spring of 2010. This fall, DirecTV removed the Comcast owned G4 channel and word comes out tonight that the Comcast owned Golf Channel is in jeopardy of going dark on DirecTV due to a carriage dispute.

When VERSUS went dark on DirecTV, hockey fans were up in arms over the dispute. Will golf fans have the same reaction? Golf Channel airs alot of the 1st and second rounds of numerous PGA events and in some instances, Golf Channel airs all 4 rounds in addition, Golf Channel is the home of the Champions Tour.

Fox Sports latest hairbrain idea

You know, when Fox Sports splashed onto the scene with winning the broadcast rights to the NFC in the early 90's, as a 20 something, I thought their coverage was really hip, but now as a 37 year old, I cann't stand "Fox NFL Sunday" and my hatred for Fox Sports is going up even more.

Yesterday's USA Today reported that Fox will be adding music to their regional coverage of the Arizona/Carolina game. The music will not be going in or out of commercial breaks, but during gameplay itself and it's a possibility that Fox could do this during the Super Bowl.

The good news is that Sunday's Arizona/Carolina broadcast is only going to Arizona and a small portion of the Carolina's, so most of the country will be spared from this train wreck.

Don't know what idea was worse, the glowing puck back in the day when Fox aired the NHL or this one.

A couple of retransmission battles to keep an eye on

Hearst TV (owners of KCCI-Des Moines and KETV-Omaha) and DirecTV are in a retransmission battle and if an agreement isn't finalized by the end of the year, DirecTV will have to take KCCI & KETV off their programming packages until an agreement is done.

Here we go again with Sinclair and Mediacom, their agreement is up the end of the year as well and potentially, KDSM (Des Moines) and KGAN and KFXA, both out of Cedar Rapids could go dark on Mediacom if a programming deal isn't made prior to the end of the year.

Good news for those with Dish Network!

Dish Network and Fox have come to an agreement on their dispute! FX, National Geographic Channel, and FS Midwest & FS North should be returned to Dish Network shortly, if not already back on.

This also avoids Fox owned & operated local Fox affiliates from being pulled at the end of this month, thankfully, none of the Iowa Fox affiliates are Fox owned and operated.

Iowa Tube Talk will return either tonight or tomorrow night

It'll be late tonight when I get home as i'm an officer with the Des Moines Elks and it's meeting night. If I don't get the retooled blog back up and going tonight, it'll be up for sure tomorrow night with listings for Wednesday.

When I say retooled, I mean i'm only going to focus on live games and live games only. Espically on the weekends, I could spend up to an hour to as much as 90 minutes tracking down all of the postgame and studio highlight shows. Now, if someone wants to pay me to do go back to the way it was, i'm sure I could find time for it, but when the blog returns, i'm just going to focus on live events.

Thursday, October 21, 2010

This might be the end of Iowa Tube Talk

There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day to do the blog. Last night was a bad night and it was this morning before I got today's TV listings posted and just now getting to my "alone time" for tonight.

With the start of college basketball looming, I was wondering how I was going to handle the blog as just the sheer amount of televised basketball games from Mid November-early April is enough to make anyone's head spin, not to mention i'm not a hoops junkie and really don't care for basketball on any level of play.

I'll be going home this weekend to Shenandoah, IA to enjoy a weekend of family, food, football, and beer drinking. Hopefully I'll return with my batteries recharged and ready to take this blog forward.

Just how popular is the NFL?

Last night, Monday Night Football on ESPN and the MLB Playoffs on TBS went head to head. The Monday Night Matchup wasn’t great, two teams with small fan bases. In fact last night was the first time Jacksonville wasn’t looking at a home blackout within 75 miles of the stadium in Jacksonville. Compare that to the ALDS, New York vs Texas, two top 10 TV markets. Monday Night Football won the ratings war.

Just another sign that the NFL & NFLPA need to get their labor issues settled.

College football programming note for this weekend

This afternoon, I received e-mail confirmation from WOI-TV that they have received permission from ABC to televise the Nebraska @ Oklahoma St. game on WOI digital subchannel 5.2. This is not the first time WOI has done this as last year, the Nebraska/Kansas game was shown on digital subchannel 5.2 as Iowa/Ohio St. was on ABC.

It may not be in HD, but it is better than nothing, just a few years ago, the only wa to watch the game from the comforts of home was to order ESPN GamePlan for the day or on ESPN3.com.
