Something good from ESPN

ESPN draws alot of criticism for it's coverage of sports, but there are times when ESPN does something good and this month, the "Worldwide Leader In Sports" is doing something good.

According to a Press Release from ESPN, the annual SportsCenter My Wish returns this month.  What is  SportsCenter My Wish?  ESPN is teaming up with the Make A Wish Foundation to make sports themed dreams come true for children who face life threatening medical conditions.

I'm not a regular SportsCenter viewer, so I really had no idea that ESPN has done this for the last several years.  This is a very cool feature and during the slowest sports month of the year, this is a great idea.  SportsCenter My Wish is July 17-20.

Offical: ESPN is the new home of Wimbledon

Yesterday, I had noted a report from the Sports Business Journal that ESPN was closing in on winning the United States television rights to Wimbledon and today, ESPN has made the official announcement.

According to a Press Release from ESPN, beginning in 2012, multiple ESPN platforms will combine to provide blanket coverage of Wimbledon.  Included in the new broadcast deal is expanded coverage of the Round of 16, including live telecast of every quarterfinal match.  In addition to expanded live coverage, following live coverage of the finals on ESPN, ABC will rebroadcast the finals via tape delay.

For more information, please visit the website linked above.

Update on the VERSUS rebrand

The Sports Business Journal is reporting that the NBC Sports Group is still planning on giving VERSUS a makeover, including a new name.  However, that change is expected to occur by January 1, 2012.

That change is later than expected as I was looking for a change sometime in August to coincide with the start of college football and hopefully the NFL season.  However though, doing the change on or near January 1 will create a buzz as that is when NBC get's going with their NHL schedule and the annual Winter Classic.

Interesting story on the creation of the Big 10 Network

For those who may have missed it over the weekend, Teddy Greenstein of The Chicago Tribune had an interesting story on how The Big 10 Network came about.

You can get all of the information at the link above, but in 2004, prior to the latest round of esclating fees that the networks today are paying, ESPN actually had a lowball offer to Big 10 Commissioner Jim Delany and that offer eventually gave Big 10 fans The Big 10 Network.
