FS North & the Minnesota Twins announce their 2011 TV schedule

The defending AL Central Division Champion Minnesota Twins open their 2011 season on Friday, April 1 at Toronot and today, the Twins along with their TV partner, FS North released the 2011 Twins TV schedule.

For the first time ever, FS North will be the exclusive TV home of the Twins televising 150 games, that's nearly every game that's not picked up for a national telecast. Dick Bremer and soon to be Hall-of-Famer, Bert Blyleven, will return to call the action.

More information can be found in this press release from the Twins: http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20110216&content_id=16651284&vkey=pr_min&fext=.jsp&c_id=min

MLB on Fox announces it's Saturday Game of the Week TV Schedule

Fox Sports is beginning it's 16th year of televising the MLB Saturday Game of the Week and yesterday, Fox released it's 2011 broadcast schedule.

According to a Fox Sports press release, some of the schedule highlights for 2011 include:

*Three consecutive weeks of prime time telecasts(6pm CT)in the month of May.

*The Midwest MLB teams will be well represented with 9 regional telecasts each from the Cubs & Cardnails, 8 regional telecasts of the Twins, and 7 regional telecasts of the White Sox.

Below my "guesses" as to what game Des Moines viewers will get on KDSM this year and is definitely subject to change. This is far from official, just making guesses based on previous years and knowing that KDSM goes with either Cubs or Cardnails whenever they are scheduled for the Fox Game of the Week.

May 28th could go one of 3 or 4 different ways as 4 of the Midwest MLB teams are scheduled that day for a Fox telecast. Speaking of the May 28th Fox primetime window, it just goes to show how screwed up the MLB blackout rules are.

Whenever Fox has a Saturday telecast, whether it be at 3pm or 6pm, Fox has an exclusive TV window meaning that no other games can be shown at this time. Doesn't matter if it's MLB Network, or locally within a team's home TV market, Fox has total exclusivity. In most areas of the country this isn't a big deal, but in Iowa, it can be problematic because all 6 of the Midwest MLB teams claim all of Iowa as part of their home TV market.

Now I realize that May 28th is Memorial Day Weekend and that Saturday is normally the least watch night of the week for TV, but as a Royals fan, there game at Texas is in the group of of games selected for regional coverage on Fox and as of now, that's the Royals only scheduled appearance on Fox. With the Carndails, Twins, and Royals all selected for the Fox exclusive TV window, 2 fan bases will be pretty upset if they cann't watch their team.

April 2nd: San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals
April 9th: New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox
April 16th: Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays
April 23rd: Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals

CBS College Sports to rebrand effective April 4th

CBS Sports today announced that effective April 4, the CBS College Sports cable TV channel will rebrand as CBS Sports Network.

According to published reports, network officials want to expand program offerings on the cable channel and changing the name to CBS College Sports is one way to do it.

College programming will remain a staple of the new CBS Sports Network, but in coming months and years, look for the cable channel, carried mostly on digital ala-carte packages, but the sky is the limit as to the potential that CBS Sports Network has.

I think this is a great move by CBS as during the summer months, game rebroadcasts of Mountain West basketball or SEC football games can only go so far.

One thing for sure, ESPN will be seeing increased competition from CBS, Comcast/NBC, and the recent announcement that FX wants to get back into the sports on TV business.
